  • School boards are the local, citizen-governing body of a school district. While the state holds the ultimate authority over education, many responsibilities are delegated to the board to oversee the successful management of schools.

  • Recent significant topics at school board meetings across the country include controversy over Critical Race Theory and Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, dress code policies, LGBTQ+ issues, sex education, gun control, book banning, and  security measures.

In Washington County, the Board of County Commissioners plays a vital role in managing local government, providing essential services, and guiding the county’s growth and development. The commissioners work directly for the people they represent, making decisions that shape the future of the county.

  • Budget and Finance:  County Commissioners are responsible for overseeing the county's budget, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are allocated appropriately to essential services, including law enforcement, public health, infrastructure, and education.

  • Policy Making: Commissioners play a key role in shaping county policies, including zoning laws, land use, and other regulations that impact the daily lives of residents. 

  • Public Services: Commissioners oversee a range of public services in Washington County, including road maintenance, parks and recreation, libraries, and emergency services. They also oversee the operation of county-run healthcare facilities, such as the Washington County Health Department.

  • Planning and Development: Commissioners are involved in planning for the county's future, including decisions about infrastructure, housing, economic development, and transportation. They help guide the county's growth and development, balancing the needs of new development with preserving the area’s natural resources and rural character.

  • Representing Constituents: Commissioners listen to the concerns of county residents and work to address issues that impact their lives. They hold regular public meetings where constituents can voice concerns, and they make decisions based on the best interests of their communities.
